Bruce Mercer, a 59-year-old man from Dayton, Texas, tragically lost his life on August 17, 2020. His death was part of a violent shooting spree carried out by Michael Wettstein, a 60-year-old neighbor who went on a rampage in their rural community. Wettstein fatally shot Bruce Mercer at Mercer's home on County Road 4901 for reasons that remain unclear.

The incident began when Wettstein, who had a history of making complaints about dogs roaming freely in the neighborhood, first shot and killed his ex-girlfriend, Misty Herndon, 38, and her father, Richard Lamm, 56. After these killings, Wettstein proceeded to Mercer's home and shot him, again without a known motive. He then moved on to another house where he shot Marvin Rumley, 66, and his daughter, Amanda Rumley, who were both critically injured but survived.

Wettstein was later found hiding in a wooded area with a swastika drawn on his forehead and in possession of the firearms used in the attacks. He was arrested and charged with capital murder, among other felony charges. The Liberty County Sheriff's Office continues to investigate the case, but no logical motive for the killings has been established.

The tragic events of that day left the community in shock and mourning, as neighbors struggled to understand the senseless violence that took the lives of Bruce Mercer and two other innocent people.
