On July 19, 2016, Emilio "Milo" Flores, a 15-year-old Hispanic male, tragically died in his father's arms after being shot at his home in Alvin, Texas. The incident occurred during a sleepover with friends. According to police reports, Emilio was shot once in the chest by Logan Anderson, an 18-year-old acquaintance, who claimed the shooting was accidental.
Anderson fled the scene but was later apprehended and charged with manslaughter.
The night of the incident, Emilio's father was awakened by a sound resembling a firecracker around 5:00 a.m. He found Emilio bleeding and slumped over in a chair on the back patio. Despite attempts at mouth-to-mouth resuscitation, Emilio did not survive. Anderson was found a few hours later in an adjacent town and taken into custody without incident. The handgun used in the shooting was recovered a few blocks away from the scene.
Two other teenagers who were present during the incident were interviewed by police but were not charged. The investigation revealed no pre-existing conflicts between Emilio and Anderson, and the motive for the shooting remains unclear. Anderson was awaiting arraignment and had not yet entered a plea at the time of the reports.
Emilio's father has since urged other families to be cautious and choose their children's friends wisely. Emilio was a student at Alvin High School and was supposed to start summer school the day after the incident. The community has rallied around the Flores family, with donations being made to help cover burial expenses.
The case has drawn significant attention, highlighting the devastating consequences of accidental shootings and the importance of gun safety. Anderson's cooperation with investigators and the ongoing legal proceedings have kept the case in the public eye, as the Flores family continues to seek justice for Emilio's untimely death.
