Pauncho Esparza, a 65-year-old Hispanic man from Alvin, Texas, tragically died on May 23, 2017. He was fatally shot in front of his home in the 3300 block of West FM 517 between the Dickinson and Alvin city limits. The incident occurred when Esparza's nephew went to check on an unknown Hispanic man walking around their property and was shot multiple times by the passenger of a black and tan truck parked nearby.

Following the shooting, the Galveston County Sheriff's Office launched an investigation and identified two suspects, Santos Botello and brothers Jose and Jaime Posada, who were taken into custody and questioned. A third suspect, Jose Ybarra Leyva, was also implicated in the murder. Leyva, who had been acting as a spiritual counselor for Esparza's son, was accused of orchestrating the murder as part of a twisted series of events involving religious rituals, sex, and revenge.
Court documents revealed that Esparza's son had sought Leyva's help after being stabbed, and Leyva's counseling sessions took a disturbing turn. Leyva allegedly warned the son that bad things would happen to his family if he did not comply with the rituals, which included stripping and rubbing vegetable oil on his wounds. When Esparza confronted Leyva to stop contacting his son, he was shot later that day.
The investigation uncovered that Leyva had extensive contact with Botello in the days leading up to the murder, and phone records linked Leyva to the other suspects. The Posada brothers claimed they were under the impression that they were only going to commit a robbery, not a murder. However, Botello admitted to shooting Esparza multiple times as he approached the truck.
