Patrol Officer William Robert Stout, Jr., aged 28, was a dedicated officer with the Terrell Police Department in Texas. On the night of June 5, 1980, Officer Stout responded to a noise complaint at the Kennedy Heights Apartments. Upon arrival, he encountered a group of people outside, and one of the men in the group became belligerent and assaulted Officer Stout, knocking him to the ground.
During the altercation, Officer Stout's service weapon was dislodged from its holster, and the assailant picked up the gun and shot Officer Stout five times. The suspect then fled the scene but later turned himself in to the authorities.
The suspect was convicted of murder and sentenced to prison. He was paroled in 1991 and again in 2006 after his parole was revoked. Officer Stout had served with the Terrell Police Department for only 11 months, but his dedication and sacrifice were remembered by his colleagues, family, and the community. He was survived by his wife and two children.
Officer Stout's tragic death was a stark reminder of the dangers law enforcement officers face while serving their communities. His legacy lives on through the memories of those who knew him and the continued efforts of law enforcement to protect and serve.
