Luis Adrian Godinez Gonzalez, a 56-year-old Hispanic man, was fatally shot inside his residence in San Diego, California, on April 27, 2025. The incident took place at a home on Skyline Drive, where officers responded to reports of gunfire and an armed individual in the area. Upon arrival, law enforcement discovered Gonzalez inside the residence with a gunshot wound.
Despite efforts to provide medical assistance, he was pronounced dead at the hospital.
The suspect in the case was identified as Gonzalez's own son, 35-year-old Adrian Godinez. According to police reports, the sequence of events began early in the morning when authorities received a call about a gunshot and an armed man walking in the neighborhood. Shortly after, another call reported an attempted armed robbery at Moonlight Liquor, a nearby store. The suspect allegedly fired a shot inside the store but did not steal anything. Officers later spotted a man matching the suspect’s description entering the backyard of the home where Gonzalez was found. Blood was observed on the suspect and at the front of the residence, prompting officers to conduct a welfare check inside, leading to the discovery of Gonzalez’s body.
Adrian Godinez was seen in the backyard manipulating a handgun before removing his clothes. He later surrendered to authorities in a new set of clothes, without the weapon. Preliminary investigations suggest that the shooting inside the home occurred before the attempted robbery at the liquor store. Godinez was taken into custody and booked on charges of murder and attempted murder. His arraignment was initially scheduled for Wednesday but was postponed at the request of his defense attorneys, who argued that he was not competent to stand trial. A mental competency hearing has been scheduled for June 10, and he remains in custody without bail.
The case has drawn attention due to its tragic nature, involving a father and son.
