On May 11, 2025, Nathaniel Bernard Jennings, a 19-year-old Black male from Palm Bay, Florida, was fatally shot in downtown Melbourne. The incident occurred around 1:51 a.m. near Vernon Place and East New Haven Avenue, close to the Neon Rodeo bar. Jennings, a freshman defensive lineman at the University of Northwestern – St. Paul in Minnesota, was visiting his hometown for Mother's Day.
Despite immediate medical attention from officers and Melbourne Fire Rescue, he was pronounced dead at Holmes Regional Medical Center at 2:24 a.m.
The suspect, 24-year-old Stephan Dieujuste, a former basketball player at Eastern Florida State College, was arrested and charged with manslaughter. According to police reports, Dieujuste claimed self-defense, stating that Jennings had threatened him and attempted to lure him into a physical confrontation. Dieujuste alleged that during the altercation, another individual restrained him, prompting him to retrieve a firearm from his vehicle and shoot Jennings. Surveillance footage and witness testimonies are being reviewed as part of the ongoing investigation.
Jennings was a graduate of Heritage High School and had recently completed a successful freshman season, recording 55 tackles. His coach and teammates remembered him as a talented athlete with a positive demeanor. His death marks Melbourne's first reported homicide of 2025, leaving the community in mourning and prompting discussions about safety in the downtown area.
