William Steel, 54, male, was shot on October 18, 2025, at the couple's home on Merlin Lane in Hempfield Township, Westmoreland County, and later died at a nearby hospital. Initial reports identified the location in the Irwin area; troopers found him in a bedroom surrounded by blood before medics transported him for treatment.
According to state police, his wife, Leeann M. Steel, 51, called 911 that afternoon and told dispatchers she had shot her husband and that he needed medical attention. Responding troopers took her into custody in a neighboring yard shortly after arriving.
Investigators and the Westmoreland County District Attorney's Office charged Leeann Steel with criminal homicide.
She was booked into the Westmoreland County Prison and denied bail while awaiting further court proceedings. Authorities have not announced any additional suspects.
Court papers describe the shooting as occurring around 4:15 p.m., and local reporting noted that William had mobility issues. The couple had been married for 29 years, details that deepened the shock in the neighborhood as troopers processed the scene and collected evidence.
