Terry Walker, a 51-year-old Black man from Birmingham, Alabama, was found unresponsive on the evening of Friday, October 29, 2010, in the Ensley neighborhood, after West Precinct officers were dispatched to a report of a person lying on the ground at 2522 Avenue F. When police arrived around 8:10 p.m., he was lying in the grass and did not respond. Paramedics came to the scene and pronounced him dead.
In the hours that followed, his body was taken to the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office as investigators worked to understand what had happened in the yard on Avenue F. The coroner determined Walker had suffered a gunshot wound, and the death was classified as a homicide.
What began as a call for a “person down” hardened into a shooting investigation, with detectives left to reconstruct the final moments that led to gunfire and a man dying outside in a residential area.
At the time of the published reports about the case, there had been no arrests and no charges filed. Police said they were still trying to identify who was responsible, and they appealed to anyone who might have seen or heard something—anything unusual along Avenue F that night—to come forward with information that could help move the investigation toward a suspect.
