On March 6, 2024, a fatal workplace shooting occurred in Pompano Beach, Florida, resulting in the death of 42-year-old Warren Chambers. Chambers was an employee at the Broward County Mass Transit maintenance center, where he had been working since his hire on Christmas Eve 2018.
The incident began when Chambers' coworker, 59-year-old Rafael A. Molina, who had been a mechanic at the facility since May 20, 2007, fatally shot him.
Molina's actions were part of a workplace dispute that escalated into violence. The shooting took place near the end of the workers' shift, and it is believed that Molina waited for Chambers in a locker room area before attacking him.
Following the shooting of Chambers, Molina encountered Broward Sheriff’s Office deputies who responded to the scene near the 3200 block of West Copans Road around 11:27 p.m. Molina, who was armed, fired at the deputies, prompting them to return fire. During the shootout, Molina fired six times, and the deputies responded with 49 shots. Molina was ultimately killed at the scene by the deputies' gunfire.
The motive behind Molina's actions remains unclear as of the investigation. Authorities are examining Molina’s shattered cellphone to see if it provides any insight into his motivations. The incident involved multiple law enforcement officers, but no officers were injured during the shootout.
Warren Chambers' family expressed deep sorrow over his loss, describing him as a devoted father, son, grandchild, nephew, brother, cousin, and friend. They requested privacy to mourn his death, highlighting the significant impact he had on those who knew him.
