Daveanand Lee Thomas, a 27-year-old from North Miami Beach, Florida, met a tragic and violent end. The details of his death are grim and involve a severe and brutal crime.
Thomas's body was discovered in a buried state in the backyard of a property in Miramar, Florida. The discovery was made after a witness, identified as Spencer, reported seeing the defendant digging in the backyard.
This led to an investigation by the Lee County Sheriff’s Office, who excavated a six-foot-by-eight-foot area behind the home and found Thomas's body four feet underground in a semi-fetal position.
The medical examination revealed that Thomas had been dead for some time, with his body in a severe state of decomposition. The skin and soft tissues had decomposed significantly, leaving portions of bone protruding from his hands and fingers. Despite the advanced decomposition, evidence of trauma was evident, including a single shotgun wound in Thomas's right upper back. The shotgun pellets had pierced his aorta, left lung, and left diaphragm, causing his stomach to rupture and gastric contents to enter his chest.
Further investigation indicated that Thomas was buried alive, as wet sand was found deep in his larynx and trachea, consistent with sand found on top of his body. This suggested that the sand entered his airways as he was still breathing. The medical examiner concluded that Thomas would have died within minutes of being shot due to the severe injuries.
The defendant in the case owned a 12-gauge shotgun, which was found in his tent along with a box of ammunition. The shotgun did not have any serial numbers. The defendant maintained his innocence despite the incriminating evidence and criticized the investigation into Thomas's death.
Thomas's identity was initially unknown but was later confirmed through dental records and DNA taken from his son. He was last seen by a witness named Bisnett on August 7th, and his body was found wearing the same clothes and jewelry he had on at the time of his last sighting.
