On February 16, 2023, John Marcus Weeks, a 33-year-old African American male from Reddick, Florida, was fatally shot in Gainesville. Born on August 21, 1989, in Gainesville, he was the son of Mary F. Weeks and the late Clifford Weeks. He is survived by his mother, three children—Jason M. Weeks, Jekari V. Weeks, and Jordan M. Kline—and three siblings: Tara Tolbert, Monique A. Weeks, and LeChristopher A. Weeks.
The Gainesville Police Department responded to reports of gunfire near the Phoenix Villas Apartments on the evening of February 16. Upon arrival, officers found John Marcus Weeks with a gunshot wound to the head; he was pronounced dead at the scene.
In the weeks following the incident, authorities investigated the circumstances surrounding the shooting. On March 6, 2023, an Alachua County teenager was arrested and charged with second-degree murder in connection with John Marcus Weeks' death.
Funeral services for John Marcus Weeks were held at Liberty Chapel Missionary Baptist Church in Reddick, Florida. A wake service took place on March 3, followed by a celebration of life on March 4. He was laid to rest at the Liberty Chapel MBC Cemetery.
