Deputy Sheriff George Lasonro Bryant, aged 48, tragically lost his life on December 3, 1908, in Gainesville, Florida. He was serving as a deputy sheriff for the Alachua County Sheriff's Office at the time of his death. The incident occurred while Deputy Bryant was attempting to arrest a man for drunk and disorderly conduct in High Springs. Initially, Bryant encountered the suspect and, showing leniency, told the man that if he returned home, he would not be arrested.
The suspect was sent home in a buggy, but when the buggy driver did not return, Bryant and another deputy went to the suspect's home to investigate.
Upon arriving at the suspect's residence, they were met by the buggy driver, who was fleeing the house and reported that the suspect had detained and beaten him. Deputy Bryant approached the front door and began speaking with the suspect. During this interaction, the suspect suddenly shot Bryant. Despite being wounded, Bryant managed to return fire but did not hit the suspect. The suspect was later apprehended and convicted of second-degree murder. He was sentenced to life at hard labor but was granted a conditional pardon seven years later, in 1916.
Deputy Bryant's death was a significant loss to the community and his family. He had served as a law enforcement officer for 15 years, both as a deputy sheriff and as the marshal for High Springs. He was survived by his third wife, a son, and three daughters. His dedication and sacrifice are remembered and honored by the Alachua County Sheriff's Office and the broader law enforcement community. Deputy Bryant is buried at Spring Hill Cemetery in Alachua, Florida, and his name is inscribed on the Florida Sheriffs and the National Law Enforcement Memorials.
