On June 27, 2023, 38-year-old Elmo Lee Johnson was fatally shot at a residence on North Winfree Street near Pine Street in Dayton, Texas. This tragic event occurred just hours after Johnson's release from the Liberty County Jail, where he had been held on drug-related charges. A close relative had dropped him off at the house shortly before the incident.
The shooting appeared to have been prompted by an altercation between Johnson and a 16-year-old male.
Johnson initially survived the shooting and was transported by air ambulance to Kingwood Hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
Following a tip, authorities apprehended the 16-year-old suspect, who admitted to the shooting and cooperated with investigators. The firearm believed to have been used was recovered. Two other individuals—a man and a woman in their late teens or early twenties—were present in the vehicle with the suspect during the shooting; they are cooperating with authorities, and no charges are expected to be filed against them at this time.
The 16-year-old has been charged with murder and is currently held at a juvenile detention facility. Due to his status as a minor, his identity has not been publicly disclosed.
Johnson had a history of legal issues, including arrests for assault causing bodily injury to a family member in February 2023 and possession of drug paraphernalia in July 2022. Despite these past encounters with the law, his untimely death has brought sorrow to his family and the Dayton community.
