Matthew Gregory "Matt" Gwaltney, a 24-year-old graduate student in civil and environmental engineering at Virginia Tech, tragically lost his life on April 16, 2007, during the Virginia Tech shootings in Blacksburg, Virginia. This horrific event, known as the Virginia Tech massacre, resulted in the deaths of 32 individuals, including Matt, and left many others injured. The shooter, Seung-Hui Cho, was a senior at Virginia Tech who carried out the attack before taking his own life.
