Wesley Brownlee: The Stockton Serial Killer
Overview
Wesley Brownlee, a suspect in a series of serial killings, was arrested on October 15, 2022. The crimes, referred to as the Stockton serial shootings, occurred between April 2021 and September 2022 in Stockton and Oakland, California. Brownlee is accused of targeting victims who were alone during nighttime or early morning hours in dimly lit areas. The victims were not robbed, and the shootings are not believed to be gang-related.
Victims
- April 10, 2021: Miguel Vasquez, a 39-year-old Hispanic man, was shot to death in East Oakland.
- April 16, 2021: Mervin Harmon, a 39-year-old Black man, was shot to death in Oakland.
- April 16, 2021: Natasha LaTour, a 46-year-old Black woman, was shot multiple times at an encampment in Stockton but survived.
- July 8, 2022: Paul Yaw, a 35-year-old Caucasian man, was shot to death on the 5600 block of Kermit Lane in Stockton.
- August 11, 2022: Salvador Debudey Jr., a 43-year-old Hispanic man, was fatally shot on the 4900 block of West Lane in Stockton.
- August 30, 2022: Jonathan Hernandez Rodriguez, a 21-year-old Hispanic man, was fatally shot on the 800 block of E. Hammer Lane in Stockton.
- September 21, 2022: Juan Cruz, a 52-year-old Hispanic man, was shot to death on the 4400 block of Manchester Avenue in Stockton.
- September 27, 2022: Lawrence Lopez Sr., a 54-year-old Hispanic man, was fatally shot on the 900 block of Porter Avenue in Stockton.
Arrest and Investigation
Wesley Brownlee was arrested while allegedly "hunting" for another victim. He was found wearing dark clothing and a mask and was armed with a firearm. The investigation linked the shootings through ballistic tests, and Brownlee was charged with multiple counts of homicide. As of 2024, his competency for trial was still under examination.
