About a month later, on July 4th, 1994, Brian's father reported him missing to the North Bay Police Service. At the time of his disappearance, Brian was described as a Caucasian male, standing 5'9" and weighing around 150 pounds, with a slender build. He had brown hair that was shorter than collar length, and brown eyes. Distinctive features included a scar on the middle finger of his left hand, decayed teeth, and a missing upper front tooth. He was last seen wearing a blue jean jacket, blue jeans, and carrying a small black leather packsack. The initial period following Brian's disappearance was marked by uncertainty, as several people who knew him reported seeing him in North Bay and Oshawa in the months that followed. One friend specifically recalled seeing Brian in downtown North Bay in September of 1994, noting he was wearing blue jeans, a jean jacket, a sweatshirt, and running shoes, and was still carrying a packsack. These accounts, coupled with reports from friends that Brian had talked about plans to hitchhike to Montreal or head out west, offered a glimmer of hope that he had perhaps voluntarily embarked on a new journey. Brian was known to be an adventurous soul who occasionally hitchhiked or hopped on trains to travel to other locations in Ontario and Quebec. His family, however, found it uncharacteristic for him to be out of contact for so long. Tragically, Brian's disappearance was the first of four in the North Bay area during the summer of 1994, with three other men also vanishing without a trace within a 104-day period.
