Hoffert was a voluntary patient at the former North Bay Psychiatric Hospital. That night, amidst blowing and drifting snow with temperatures dropping to minus 10 degrees Celsius and a wind chill making it feel colder than minus 20, he walked away from the hospital grounds. He was ill-prepared for the harsh weather, wearing only a blue long-sleeved shirt, blue jeans, and running shoes. His departure from the hospital under such dangerous conditions sparked immediate concern for his well-being. Hospital staff reported Russell Hoffert missing shortly after 10 p.m. that Friday night. Authorities were alerted that he had been seen walking along Bomarc Road, which is off Highway 11. The North Bay Police Service quickly launched a search, their patrol and Emergency Response Team officers combing the area. The initial officers to arrive used their lights, sirens, and horns in the hope that Hoffert might see or hear them and come toward them for help. Footprints were discovered near a gravel pit at the end of Bomarc Road, but these led to no further clues. The search continued until the early morning hours before being paused to organize a more intensive effort at sunrise. The following days saw a large-scale search operation involving the Ontario Provincial Police's canine unit and a helicopter, along with four-wheelers from the Anishnabek Police. They meticulously scoured the area where it was believed Hoffert had gone, including the surrounding wooded terrain and the gravel pit. Investigators also went door-to-door, canvassing area residents in the hope of finding witnesses who might have seen something. Despite these exhaustive efforts over three days, the search yielded no signs of Russell Hoffert. Described as an Indigenous male with black, curly hair, brown eyes, and a scar on his abdomen, his disappearance left his loved ones and investigators without answers. His case remains an open and unsolved investigation, with no evidence to indicate foul play. The circumstances surrounding his disappearance on that frigid night, the lack of any significant leads, and the fact that he has never been seen or heard from since, create a troubling overview of a man who seemingly walked out into a storm and vanished without a trace.
