In the quiet city of North Bay, Ontario, a young man named Steven Hector Gravel seemingly vanished into the cold December air, leaving behind a mystery that would perplex his family and investigators for years to come. At 23 years old, Steven was last seen by friends at a residence in North Bay shortly before midnight on December 23rd, 2000. Originally from Cochrane, Ontario, he had grown up in North Bay, attending Widdifield Secondary School. Those who knew him describe a young man with a passion for the outdoors, enjoying activities like fishing, snowmobiling, and mountain-biking, as well as socializing with his friends. On the night he disappeared, he was wearing a dark-colored winter coat, blue jeans, runners, and a baseball cap. The circumstances surrounding his disappearance are both troubling and complex. Steven left the gathering in his stepfather's black 1990 Ford Bronco. In the early hours of December 24th, 2000, North Bay Police patrol officers spotted a vehicle matching this description being driven by a suspected impaired male. They attempted to initiate a traffic stop, but the driver eluded them. Later that morning, the Ontario Provincial Police discovered the Ford Bronco abandoned near Lake Nosbonsing Road, just east of the Highway 11/654 exit. There were no signs of injury or foul play at the scene, and it appeared as though the driver had simply walked away. An investigation at the time led police to believe that Steven had been operating the vehicle without the owner's consent, and a warrant was issued for his arrest. However, authorities were unable to locate him. In a poignant turn of events, Steven Hector Gravel was not officially reported as a missing person until October 14, 2014, nearly 14 years after he was last seen. The report was made by out-of-province family members who had not heard from him for an extended period. This significant delay has presented unique challenges for investigators trying to piece together the timeline of his life after December 2000. Steven is described as a Caucasian male, standing 5'10" and weighing between 150 and 170 pounds, with brown hair styled long in the back and short on top, and hazel eyes. He has numerous distinct tattoos, including a gargoyle on his back, a baby portrait on his right shoulder, a dagger with the word "Dad" on his left shoulder, the letters "FTW" on his left upper arm, and a wolf head on his right forearm, among others. Despite the passage of time, his case remains an open and active investigation. The North Bay Police Service continues to seek any information that might shed light on his whereabouts and finally bring answers to a family that has waited so long for closure.
