On the night of October 30, 1998, a date known as Devil's Night, 18-year-old Jake Nicholas Just attended a party in a residential area in the north end of Midland, Ontario. Later that evening, sometime around midnight, Jake left the gathering to walk home with friends. The group was walking together when Jake decided to part ways with his friend, opting for a familiar shortcut through a wooded trail while his friend chose to stay on the well-lit street. The two planned to meet up where the trail exited the woods, but Jake was never seen again. At the time of his disappearance, he was wearing an olive green and beige long-sleeved shirt, blue jeans, and size 11 black "DVS" brand skateboarding shoes. He was also carrying a black nylon backpack with a gold Jaguar logo. When friends began calling for Jake the next day, his mother, Debbie, grew worried and knew something was wrong. She reported her son missing to the police that evening, nearly 24 hours after he was last seen. An extensive search was launched immediately, with investigators focusing on the wooded area and a nearby bog where Jake was thought to have entered. Over the years, multiple exhaustive searches were conducted, employing grid patterns, helicopters with heat-sensing technology, police divers, and cadaver-sniffing dogs, but these efforts yielded no clues. Neither Jake nor any of his belongings, including the distinctive black backpack he carried, have ever been recovered. Friends reported that Jake had been drinking heavily at the party and may have sustained a head injury while jokingly breaking bottles over his head with friends. Another account suggested that as the party was ending, Jake fled into the woods after being chased by a local resident. The years following Jake's disappearance have been filled with uncertainty for his family and investigators. With no physical evidence found, the case grew cold, leaving only theories behind. Some speculate that, hampered by alcohol and a possible injury, Jake may have become disoriented and succumbed to the elements in the dense woods or stumbled into a boggy swamp. However, searches of the marshy areas found no indication that anyone had been there around the time he vanished. Hundreds of interviews were conducted and numerous tips, even from psychics, were followed up on, but none led to a breakthrough. The Government of Ontario has offered a $50,000 reward for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of anyone responsible for his disappearance. The case of Jake Nicholas Just remains an open and perplexing mystery.
