In the winter of 1964, a young, 22-year-old Cree woman named Marie Norma Mike vanished from the Beardy's and Okemasis First Nation near Rosthern, Saskatchewan, leaving behind a mystery that has endured for decades. Born on May 13, 1941, Marie was originally from the Siksika Nation but was living on the Beardy's and Okemasis First Nation at the time of her disappearance. On the evening of February 22, 1964, she was with her husband at a residence on the First Nation. At some point during the evening, she reportedly went to use an outdoor washroom and was never seen again. A blizzard raged that same night, adding a layer of peril to her sudden absence. It was approximately a week later that her husband officially reported her missing. Immediate and extensive searches of the surrounding area were launched in an effort to find any trace of the young woman, but the harsh winter conditions and the passage of time yielded no clues. Marie was described as being 5 feet 4 inches tall and weighing around 150 pounds, with a heavy build, black hair, and black eyes. She had distinctive scars on her right hand and forearm. When she was last seen, she was wearing a blouse and a skirt. Family members have noted that she always wore her wedding band and never took it off. Despite the passage of time, these details remain the last known descriptions of Marie. Over the many years that have passed since Marie Norma Mike's disappearance, her case has remained an open investigation. While unverified rumors of foul play have circulated within the community, no charges have ever been laid in connection with her disappearance, and her remains have never been found.
