On the evening of January 23, 1992, he joined friends at "The Ship," a popular campus pub. After spending some time there, he began the short walk back to his residence. Accounts differ on the exact details, but sometime after midnight on January 24, the friends he was walking with decided to return to the pub for a forgotten item. Dean, who was less than 100 meters from the safety of his dormitory door, continued on alone and was never seen again. The following day, concern grew when the remarkably diligent student, who was known for making his bed every single day, missed his classes. A friend, after getting no response at his door, eventually gained access to his room to find it perfectly neat and undisturbed. Dean's bed was still made, a clear indication that he had never returned the previous night. An immediate search by friends and, subsequently, police began, but turned up no signs of the missing student. He had disappeared wearing faded blue jeans, Nike running shoes, his dark blue St. Joe's Rangers hockey jersey, and a distinctive Grande Cache Bantam Elks Hockey jacket with his name and position on the sleeves. His bank accounts, containing over $3,000, were left untouched, and the only money he had on him was $20 he had withdrawn earlier that evening. The investigation yielded only one solitary clue. Roughly one to two weeks after his disappearance, a librarian discovered Dean's dark blue St. Joe's Rangers baseball cap in the backyard of a residence near the High Level Bridge, a location spanning the North Saskatchewan River and several kilometers from the university campus. This discovery only deepened the mystery, offering no clear answers as to how it got there. Theories have ranged from a tragic accident in the harsh winter conditions to suicide or foul play, but a lack of evidence has left each possibility as pure speculation. In the years since, the case has grown cold, leaving his family and friends without answers. His memory is honored at St. Joseph's College, which recognizes January 24th as Dean Mortensen Day, a solemn tribute to the bright student who vanished just steps from his home.
