On that Tuesday evening, she followed her usual routine, spending time at a local youth center before catching a bus home. A friend who was on the same bus saw Julie sitting near the driver before getting off at a shopping center. The bus driver later recalled chatting with her during the ride and noted a man standing at her bus stop who declined to board. Julie was last seen getting off the bus just a short distance, approximately 50 meters, from her home. When her father woke up the next morning and realized she had never made it home, a frantic search began. The investigation into Julie's disappearance quickly focused on a prime suspect: the family's upstairs neighbor, Richard Bouillon. Bouillon was a convicted sexual predator with a significant criminal history that included rape and sexual assault. Despite being questioned, police initially lacked sufficient evidence to charge him in connection with Julie's case. The case eventually went cold, leaving Julie's family with agonizing uncertainty. A significant break in the case came years later, but it was a grim one. In 2006, while dying of cancer in a hospital, Bouillon made a deathbed confession to a nurse, admitting to killing Julie. He reportedly told the nurse that he had put her body in a sports bag and thrown it into the Mille ÃŽles River. This confession was heard by another nurse and two correctional service guards as well. Despite the confession, Julie's remains have never been found. Police searches of the river, prompted by the nurse's eventual report of the confession in 2011, were unsuccessful. The delay in the information reaching investigators meant crucial time was lost. A coroner's inquest in 2012 concluded that Julie Surprenant was likely raped and killed by Richard Bouillon. The case officially remains an open investigation, a painful and unresolved tragedy for her loved ones and the community. In 2014, family and friends created a monument in her memory, a testament to a life cut short and a search for answers that continues.
