David Clay, a 24-year-old resident of Fresno, California, tragically lost his life on December 17, 2022, in an incident that has been described as an accidental shooting. According to reports, the incident occurred around midnight near Cornelia and Belmont avenues. David was in the driver's seat of a car when his passenger, Javier McCoy, also 24, accidentally discharged a firearm.
McCoy, who was seated in the backseat, was reportedly handling the loaded gun when it went off, with the bullet passing through the seat and striking Clay in the upper body. Despite being rushed to a local hospital by friends, Clay succumbed to his injuries.
The Fresno County Sheriff's Office conducted an investigation into the shooting. McCoy claimed that the discharge was accidental, a statement that was corroborated by the circumstances of the incident. As a result, McCoy was arrested and charged with involuntary manslaughter. He was booked into the Fresno County Jail on December 18, 2022, but was released later that day after posting bond. The case was marked as the 23rd homicide investigation for the sheriff's office in 2022.
Further legal proceedings were scheduled, with McCoy set to appear in court on March 2, 2023.
