On June 28, 2022, 49-year-old Juan Cristalinas, a pizza delivery driver from Stanton, CA, tragically lost his life while attempting to assist an elderly man who was being assaulted. Cristalinas was driving around Stanton when he came across a group of men attacking a 76-year-old man. Demonstrating his compassionate nature, Cristalinas stopped his vehicle to intervene and help the elderly man. Unfortunately, during his brave attempt to break up the assault, Cristalinas was shot by the attackers.
The 76-year-old man also sustained gunshot wounds but survived with non-life-threatening injuries.
The incident occurred on the 7000 block of Lessue Avenue, and the suspects fled the scene before deputies arrived. The Orange County Sheriff's Department, along with federal agencies such as the U.S. Marshals and Customs and Border Protection, launched an extensive investigation that spanned over a year. This investigation involved thousands of hours of work and collaboration among various law enforcement units, including the North and South Gang Enforcement Teams, Technical Investigations Unit, and Special Enforcement Bureau.
On July 5, 2023, the investigation culminated in the arrest of three suspects: 19-year-olds Henry Diep Le and Adrian Castaneda, both from Anaheim, and 18-year-old Damian Ivan Mayorga from Garden Grove. These individuals were identified as the perpetrators responsible for the fatal shooting of Juan Cristalinas. They were apprehended at different locations in Orange County, with one suspect being taken into custody at the Mexican border. All three suspects were booked into the Orange County Jail on suspicion of murder.
The arrests brought some measure of justice to Cristalinas' grieving family, though the loss of their loved one remains deeply felt. Cristalinas was remembered by his family and community as a kind-hearted individual who always went out of his way to help others. His son, Ivan Cristalinas, expressed that his father's actions on that fateful day were a true reflection of his character. The investigation into the case continues, and authorities have encouraged anyone with additional information to come forward.
