On August 31, 2021, Amanda Nicole Ferrell, aged 30, tragically lost her life in a shooting incident in Salinas, California. The incident occurred around 12:33 PM on East Bernal Drive near the intersection with Maryal Drive. Amanda, along with Michael David Ramos, aged 33, was found suffering from multiple gunshot wounds when Salinas Police Officers responded to a ShotSpotter alert indicating ten shots fired in the area.
Both victims succumbed to their injuries shortly after the officers arrived at the scene.
The investigation revealed that Amanda and Michael had arrived at a residence to pick up a vehicle they had rented through a ridesharing app. While waiting outside, a silver sedan with four occupants approached them. The occupants asked Michael where he was from before two of them opened fire, striking and killing both Amanda and Michael. The suspects then fled the scene in the sedan, heading northbound.
Salinas Police Detectives took over the investigation and began collecting video surveillance to track the suspect vehicle's direction. They identified the driver of the vehicle as David Delgado Jimenez, aged 21, who was arrested on September 2, 2021. Further investigation led to the identification of the remaining three suspects. Yohani Nevarez Mendez, aged 18, was already in custody on unrelated charges and was lodged at the Monterey County Jail on January 6, 2022, for two counts of murder. A juvenile male, who was 17 at the time of the incident, was also charged with two counts of murder and lodged at the Monterey County Juvenile Hall on May 2, 2022. The fourth suspect, Mario Alexander Rodriguez, aged 20, was charged with two counts of murder by the Monterey County District Attorney’s Office on July 13, 2022.
The arrests were the result of the diligent efforts of the Salinas Police Department, in cooperation with the Monterey County District Attorney’s Office. The community also played a crucial role by providing information that helped develop investigative leads. The Salinas Police Department emphasized their commitment to working with the community to bring perpetrators to justice and provide closure to the families of victims of violent crimes. With all suspects in custody, the police assured that there was no additional risk to the community.
