Faith Elizabeth Valenzuela, a 29-year-old cheerleading coach from Salinas, California, tragically lost her life on July 5, 2022. The events leading to her death began in the early hours of that day when she received a text message from her ex-boyfriend, Jacob Anthony Bustamantez, asking for a ride. Valenzuela, who had been trying to cut off contact with Bustamantez, agreed to pick him up near downtown Salinas.
Shortly after she picked him up, Bustamantez, sitting in the passenger seat, used a 9mm semiautomatic ghost gun to shoot Valenzuela while she was driving. The car subsequently crashed into a wooden fence, and Bustamantez fled the scene, discarding the gun and other evidence nearby. Valenzuela was found unconscious with gunshot wounds by a police officer who happened upon the crash site. Despite efforts to save her, she succumbed to her injuries at the hospital an hour later.
The investigation quickly identified Bustamantez as the prime suspect. Evidence, including the discarded gun and DNA analysis, linked him to the crime. Witnesses also confirmed that Valenzuela had expressed her desire to end all contact with Bustamantez in the days leading up to her death. Bustamantez was arrested two days after the shooting. Initially, he denied any involvement but eventually admitted to the crime. He was charged with second-degree murder and later pleaded guilty. In October 2024, Bustamantez was sentenced to 35 years to life in prison for the murder of Faith Elizabeth Valenzuela.
Valenzuela's death left a significant impact on her community, especially at Everett Alvarez High School, where she coached cheerleading. She was remembered for her bright smile and kind heart, and a GoFundMe campaign was started to support her 10-year-old daughter and family. The case highlighted the dangers of domestic violence and the tragic consequences it can have. Bustamantez's sentencing brought some closure to Valenzuela's family and friends, but the loss of her life at such a young age remains a poignant reminder of the need for vigilance and support for those in abusive relationships.
