Tyshawn Powell, a 20-year-old resident of San Diego, California, tragically lost his life on June 29, 2019. The incident occurred in the Paradise Hills community, where Powell was found unresponsive in his driveway on the 6200 block of Childs Avenue. Responding officers and paramedics were unable to save him, and he was pronounced dead shortly after their arrival.
The cause of death was determined to be multiple gunshot wounds, with at least one fatal shot to the head.
The investigation quickly led to the arrest of two teenagers, 19-year-old Angelo Roshon Richardson Jr. and 18-year-old Mikayla Ann Castillo. According to reports, Powell and Richardson were friends, and Powell had even allowed Richardson to stay in his van. On the morning of the incident, an argument between the two escalated, resulting in Richardson firing multiple shots at Powell. Several of these shots also struck Powell's home, where his family members were present at the time. Richardson fled the scene but was apprehended nearby by the San Diego Police Department. He was found in possession of a firearm and was on probation for a previous felony robbery charge from 2018.
Richardson was charged with four counts, including murder, shooting at an inhabited dwelling, possession of a firearm, and being a prohibited person in possession of ammunition. If convicted on all charges, he faces a potential sentence of 86 years to life in prison. He is currently being held on $2 million bail. Castillo, on the other hand, was charged with being an accessory to murder and carrying a concealed weapon. She was released on bail pending further investigation.
The case has garnered significant attention, with Powell's family and the community mourning the loss of a young man described as having a big heart and a willingness to help others. A memorial with flowers and candles was set up outside his home in his honor.
