Michael Ali Hammonds, a 20-year-old aspiring rap singer from Hyde Park, was fatally shot on November 4, 2018, in the 16200 block of Hawthorne Boulevard in Lawndale, California. According to Los Angeles County coroner’s records, Hammonds was with his longtime friend Daevion Johnson, 21, and a group of others accompanying a neighborhood rapper who had rented space at a studio.
The events of that evening were marked by confusion and violence, ultimately leading to Hammonds' tragic death.
The incident began when the neighborhood rapper, who was a gang member, went outside for a cigarette and spotted a man from a rival gang who had previously threatened him. This led to a physical altercation where the rapper's friends attacked the rival gang member. The situation escalated when the beaten man threatened to return with a gun. In response, the neighborhood rapper called two friends for protection without informing the others. As tensions rose, someone began pounding on the studio's main door, causing the group to rush outside again. During the chaos, Johnson, who was holding the door open, was handed a small-caliber automatic gun. Unfamiliar with firearms, Johnson put the gun in his pocket.
The group chased the rival gang member to a nearby liquor store and then returned to the studio. As they were re-entering, two men approached the door. Mistaking them for associates of the rival gang member, someone in the group shouted for Johnson to shoot. Believing his life was in danger, Johnson fired the gun, accidentally striking Hammonds in the chest. Hammonds was the only person injured and was taken to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 8:47 p.m. The cause of death was a gunshot wound to the chest.
Following the incident, Johnson was deeply affected by the accidental shooting of his friend. The investigation revealed that Johnson had no prior experience with guns and was not a gang member. The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department conducted a thorough investigation, detailing the chaotic series of events that led to the shooting.
