Byung Kim, a 40-year-old merchant from Lawndale, California, tragically lost his life on August 19, 1988. The incident occurred after Kim withdrew $80,000 from a local bank to cash checks for his customers. As he was returning to his van, he was ambushed by Omar Dent III, a member of the Eight-Trey Crips gang. Dent shot Kim, mortally wounding him, and then fled the scene in Kim's van. During his escape, Dent also shot a retired police officer who attempted to intervene.
