On January 1, 2016, Gurcharan Singh Gill, a 68-year-old Sikh man, was found stabbed to death at Shields Express Mart, a liquor store in Fresno, California. He was the first homicide victim of 2016 in the city. Surveillance footage showed a pale, young man in red attacking Gill. Authorities have not yet identified the suspect, despite offering a $10,000 reward for information.
Gill's murder, along with other incidents against Sikhs in Fresno, has led to concerns of escalating violence targeting the Sikh community, potentially driven by xenophobic motives.
