James L. 'JoJo' Rentz Sr., aged 37, tragically lost his life on May 11, 2015, in Gainesville, Florida. Rentz, a father of six, was known for his generosity and dedication to his family and community. On the night of his death, Rentz had just returned to his home at 2425 NW 57th Place from a nearby convenience store when he was fatally shot. The assailant used a Romanian Drako AK pistol, a rare firearm, to fire several rounds at Rentz as he stood on his front stoop.
Despite immediate efforts by neighbors and first responders, Rentz was pronounced dead upon arrival at UF Health Shands Hospital.
The investigation into Rentz's murder revealed that robbery was the motive behind the shooting. The Gainesville Police Department (GPD) quickly identified the weapon used in the crime and sought public assistance in tracing its origins. The rare nature of the Romanian Drako AK pistol, a variation of the AK-47 without a rifle stock, was a key focus for investigators. The firearm was found near the entrance to the Pine Ridge apartments, where Rentz lived.
Three men were eventually indicted for their roles in Rentz's murder. Brandon Michael Hudson, Yarnell Rashard Bagley, and Freddie Alonzo Lynum faced various charges, including first-degree murder, attempted robbery with a deadly weapon, and conspiracy to commit robbery. Hudson pleaded no contest to accessory after the fact to first-degree murder, attempt to commit robbery with a deadly weapon, and conspiracy to commit robbery while armed with a firearm. He was sentenced to 25 years in prison. Bagley, who was found guilty of committing the fatal shooting, was sentenced to life in prison. Lynum also pleaded no contest to charges of accessory after the fact to first-degree murder and possession of a firearm by a felon, receiving a 10-year prison sentence.
The case highlighted the impact of violent crime on families and communities, as Rentz's children were left without their father. The community mourned the loss of a man who was known for his kindness and willingness to help others. The legal proceedings brought some measure of justice for Rentz's family, but the pain of his loss continues to be felt by those who knew and loved him.
