On November 26, 2009, Lisa Knight, aged 33, was tragically killed in a mass shooting during a Thanksgiving family gathering in Jupiter, Florida. The perpetrator, Paul Michael Merhige, opened fire on his relatives after waiting for three hours at the dinner. The shooting resulted in the deaths of four family members, including Lisa Knight, who was pregnant at the time, her twin sister Carla Merhige, their aunt Raymonde Joseph, and their six-year-old cousin Makayla Sitton.
Lisa's husband, Patrick Knight, was severely injured and spent three months in a coma due to the attack.
Paul Merhige, who had a history of mental health issues and longstanding grievances against his family, meticulously planned the massacre. He purchased multiple firearms shortly before the incident and expressed a desire for revenge that had been building for two decades. After the shooting, Merhige fled, prompting a nationwide manhunt. He was eventually captured on January 2, 2010, following a tip from the television show "America's Most Wanted".
In the aftermath of the tragedy, Merhige faced multiple charges, including four counts of first-degree murder and two counts of attempted first-degree murder. On October 27, 2011, he pleaded guilty to all charges and was sentenced to seven consecutive life sentences without the possibility of parole. The case also led to a civil lawsuit filed by Jim and Muriel Sitton, parents of the youngest victim, against Merhige's parents, alleging they could have prevented the massacre. However, in 2014, the 4th District Court of Appeal ruled that Merhige's parents could not be held liable for the actions of their son.
