Scott Richard Rakow, a 29-year-old white male police officer, tragically lost his life on June 30, 1988, in Miami Beach, Florida. Officer Rakow was engaged in a high-stakes undercover drug operation when he was fatally shot. The operation involved an undercover detective attempting to sell $100,000 worth of cocaine. However, the drug dealers had spotters in high-rise buildings who observed the police sting and alerted the suspects.
The suspects then attempted to rob the undercover detective, leading to a chaotic pursuit.
During the pursuit, one of the suspects fled in the undercover vehicle, while the other escaped in the vehicle they arrived in. Officer Rakow pursued the latter vehicle until it crashed at the intersection of NE 83rd Street and Bayshore Drive in Miami. As the suspect fled on foot, he opened fire on Officer Rakow, striking him in the head. Despite immediate medical attention, Officer Rakow succumbed to his injuries without regaining consciousness.
The suspect who shot Officer Rakow was apprehended shortly after the incident, having jumped into a nearby canal. Both the shooter and an accomplice were subsequently convicted of first-degree murder, armed robbery, weapons violations, and drug trafficking. They were sentenced to life in prison, ensuring they would not pose a threat to society again.
