In the afternoon sun of May 26, 2013, a burst of violence shattered the weekend peace in a West Baltimore neighborhood. Twenty-three-year-old Melvin Taylor, a Black male, was enjoying a Memorial Day weekend ride on his dirt bike on an athletic field behind the Baltimore Liberation Diploma Plus High School in the 2800 block of North Dukeland Street. It was there that he was approached by several individuals and the joyful sounds of the dirt bike were tragically silenced by the crackle of gunfire.
