On April 4, 2020, Trey Chanley Gibson, a 17-year-old male, was tragically shot and killed in Orange, Texas. The incident occurred at an apartment complex on Burton Avenue, where Gibson was found with a gunshot wound to the chest. He was transported to Exceptional ER, where he was pronounced deceased by Judge Price.
The Orange Police Department identified two suspects involved in the shooting.
The first suspect was described as a large black male wearing a white tank top and dark shorts, while the second suspect was a short black male with dreadlocks, wearing a dark shirt and dark shorts. The suspects were believed to be associated with a teal four-door Buick with damage to the driver-side rear door area. However, the vehicle was later found and determined not to have been used by the suspects.
Three days after the shooting, on April 7, 2020, Clifton Hawthorne, 21, and Davion Riggs, 17, were arrested and charged with capital murder in connection with Gibson's death. Both suspects had bonds set at $1,000,000 each. The investigation revealed that the shooting took place inside the fence at the James Zay Roberts Apartments.
The community responded with a GoFundMe campaign to help cover the burial costs for Gibson, which raised $1,105 of the $10,000 goal. The Orange Police Department continues to seek any information related to the case and encourages anyone with information to come forward.
This tragic event has left a lasting impact on Gibson's family and the community, as they mourn the loss of a young life cut short by violence.
