On August 11, 2014, Ryan Callens, a 48-year-old man from Frisco, Texas, was tragically shot and killed in his home. His wife, Maria Callens, aged 49, was also found deceased in their bedroom. The couple's 16-year-old son, Zachary Callens, was discovered outside the residence when police arrived. Zachary later admitted to his sister and police that he had committed the murders.
Zachary Callens was charged with two counts of murder and was later certified to stand trial as an adult.
The investigation revealed that Zachary used a rifle with a flashlight attached by duct tape to carry out the killings. DNA evidence linked Zachary to the items found at the scene, including the duct tape and flashlight. In September 2016, Zachary was found guilty of both murders and sentenced to life in prison for each count.
The case was prosecuted by Assistant District Attorneys Danette Broome and Cynthia Walker, with the investigation led by Frisco Det. Daniel Bardwell and Sgt. Nelson Walter. The tragic incident shook the community and highlighted issues of family dynamics and mental health.
