On November 15, 2023, 62-year-old Dung Doan was fatally shot near the Walmart at 8555 Preston Road in Frisco, Texas. Doan, who had immigrated from Vietnam in 2022, was a husband and father of two. He frequently walked to the nearby Walmart from his residence for exercise and errands. On that evening, he was returning home when he was attacked in what authorities described as a random act of violence.
During the same incident, 20-year-old Zachary Lowe, an Army veteran, was also shot but survived. Lowe recounted that he was approached by an individual who initially asked for a cigarette and then demanded money before shooting him twice in the back. He believes that Doan's presence may have inadvertently startled the assailant, providing Lowe a chance to escape.
Following an extensive investigation aided by public tips, Frisco police identified two suspects: 42-year-old Jhirrell Harris and 37-year-old Stephanie Gayden, both from Monroe, Louisiana. In May 2024, Harris was located in the Ouachita County Jail, where he was already detained on unrelated charges. He was served with warrants for capital murder, aggravated robbery, and aggravated assault. Gayden was arrested separately and charged with capital murder; she is held in the Collin County Jail on a $1 million bond.
The arrests brought some relief to the grieving families, though the loss remains profound. Doan's family, who had moved to the United States seeking a better life, expressed heartbreak over the tragic and senseless loss of a man remembered as loving and hardworking.
The Frisco Police Department acknowledged the critical role of community assistance in resolving the case, noting that an anonymous tip significantly expedited the identification of the suspects. They emphasized the importance of public participation in maintaining community safety.
