Mikesha Johnson, a 21-year-old woman, was found shot and dumped on the side of a road in the early hours of March 5, 2024. Hallandale Beach Police responded to reports of an unconscious and injured woman who had been dropped off by a vehicle on Pembroke Road, near the Hollywood-Hallandale Beach border. Upon arrival, officers found Johnson suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest. Despite efforts by police and fire rescue to provide medical aid, Johnson died from her injuries at the scene.
Investigations revealed that Mikesha Johnson and the suspect, Omar Simpson, had met at a house party earlier that evening. Following a thorough investigation, detectives identified Omar Simpson, 21, as the perpetrator of the crime. Simpson was arrested on a charge of first-degree premeditated murder with a firearm.
Simpson was booked into the Broward jail, where he was being held without bond. Johnson's mother, Bernell Rutherford, expressed relief over the arrest, stating her intention to attend court proceedings to advocate for Simpson's sentencing.
