On February 18, 2024, at approximately 3:05 p.m., 43-year-old Ali Jabbar was fatally shot while walking with a group on the sidewalk in the 600 block of 16th Street in San Diego's East Village neighborhood. The assailant approached the group, specifically targeted Jabbar, and fired multiple shots before fleeing the scene in a silver or gray sedan. Despite prompt medical attention, Jabbar succumbed to his injuries at a local hospital.
Following an intensive investigation, San Diego Police Department detectives identified 44-year-old Tashaughn Jackson as the primary suspect in the homicide. On March 14, 2024, nearly a month after the incident, Jackson was apprehended during a traffic stop on westbound Interstate 8 near the Main Street exit in El Cajon. He was subsequently booked into county jail on suspicion of murder.
Authorities have indicated that the attack appeared to be a targeted act against Jabbar, with no harm intended toward his companions. The motive behind the shooting remains under investigation.
