On November 6, 2023, at approximately 10:30 a.m., 56-year-old Commander Darren Harris of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department (LASD) was found deceased from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head at his residence in Santa Clarita, California.
Commander Harris was a 25-year veteran of the LASD, having served in various capacities throughout his distinguished career.
He began as a spokesman for the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff's Station, later advancing to the rank of lieutenant in the Sheriff's Information Bureau. Subsequently, he was promoted to captain, overseeing the department's Transportation Services Bureau. At the time of his passing, Harris held the position of commander, reflecting his dedication and commitment to law enforcement.
Tragically, Commander Harris's death was one of four suicides involving LASD personnel within a 24-hour period. The other individuals included retired Sergeant Greg Hovland, found deceased at his home in Quartz Hill; Custody Assistant Corina Thompson, who died in Stevenson Ranch; and Deputy Arturo Atilano Valadez, who passed away in Pomona. These incidents have profoundly impacted the department, prompting an urgent review of employee well-being and mental health support systems.
In response to these tragedies, Sheriff Robert Luna expressed deep concern for the well-being of department personnel, emphasizing the importance of peer support and the availability of mental health resources. The LASD has reiterated its commitment to providing confidential counseling services through its Psychological Services Bureau and has encouraged employees to utilize the Peer Support Program during this challenging time.
