On May 23, 2023, 20-year-old Trey Walker was fatally shot outside the San Diego Central Library in the East Village neighborhood. The incident occurred around 12:17 p.m. in the plaza in front of the library, where officers found Walker and a 24-year-old man suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Walker was pronounced dead at the scene from a gunshot wound to the torso, while the other victim was transported to a local hospital with injuries to the lower part of his body; he was expected to
survive.
Investigations revealed that the shooting stemmed from an altercation at the library entrance. A group, including the victims, confronted the suspect, 21-year-old Kenneth Chaney, over a stolen backpack. During this confrontation, Chaney allegedly produced a handgun and fired at the victims.
Two days after the incident, on May 25, 2023, Chaney was located near University Avenue and the I-15 Freeway and arrested by San Diego Police. He was booked into County Jail on multiple charges related to the shooting, including murder.
In subsequent court proceedings, Chaney pleaded not guilty to charges of murder and attempted murder. During his arraignment, the Deputy District Attorney stated that the dispute leading to the shooting stemmed from the theft of a backpack. It was alleged that after Chaney's friend stole a person's backpack, the owner chased them down, leading to the confrontation at the library where the shooting occurred.
By July 2024, a judge ordered Chaney to stand trial on charges including murder and attempted murder. The court proceedings were ongoing, with Chaney facing the possibility of life in prison if convicted.
Trey Walker's death was a tragic loss for his family and community. He was remembered as an amazing friend and father, leaving behind a 10-month-old daughter. His family mourned his untimely death and called for an end to senseless violence.
