In the early hours of April 1, 2023, at approximately 2:30 a.m., Orange Police Department officers responded to reports of gunfire in the 1800 block of Church Street in Orange, Texas. Upon arrival, they discovered 25-year-old Dalvin Levi lying in the roadway with a gunshot wound. Levi was promptly transported to Christus St. Elizabeth Hospital in Beaumont, where he was later pronounced deceased.
During the investigation, authorities arrested 28-year-old Shontasia Dia'Nay Garrett, who was known to Levi, indicating the incident stemmed from a domestic altercation. Garrett was charged with murder and booked into the Orange County Jail with bond set at $1 million.
In September 2024, Garrett stood trial for the shooting death of Levi. After four days of proceedings, an Orange County jury found her guilty of the lesser charge of manslaughter. She was sentenced to 10 years of probation and fined $10,000.
The case underscores the tragic consequences of domestic disputes escalating to violence, resulting in the loss of a young life and significant legal repercussions for the perpetrator.
