On July 10, 2018, Ashley Nicole Morin, a 31-year-old woman from the Ahtahkakoop First Nation, disappeared in North Battleford, Saskatchewan. She was last seen on foot leaving a house in the city. At the time of her disappearance, Ashley was described as being approximately 5'2" tall and weighing 110 pounds, with long black hair and brown eyes. She was last seen wearing grey sweatpants, a black t-shirt with white writing, a black hat, and sunglasses. Family and friends have stated that it is very uncharacteristic of her to not be in touch. Since she was last seen, her cell phone and bank account have not been used. A year after she was last seen, in July 2019, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) announced that they suspected Ashley was the victim of foul play and that her disappearance was being investigated as a homicide. The news was heartbreaking for her family, who had been holding out hope for her safe return. As part of their investigation, police released information about a two-toned black and white van with no windows that was seen around 9:30 p.m. near 96th Street and 16th Avenue, one of the last places Ashley was seen. The RCMP have indicated they believe multiple people were involved in her disappearance. The investigation remains active, with the Saskatchewan RCMP's Historical Case Unit continuing to follow up on leads and seek answers. In the years since Ashley vanished, her family has been relentless in their search for answers and justice. They organize an annual walk to raise awareness for her case and to ensure that her memory is not forgotten. These walks serve as a painful reminder of the ongoing crisis of missing and murdered Indigenous people in Canada. The family has offered a reward for any information that leads to finding her. Despite numerous searches, including extensive efforts along the North Saskatchewan River by dive teams and ground crews, Ashley's remains have not been found. The case remains a painful and unsolved mystery; a young woman, described by her uncle as a kind and strong athlete who lit up a room, vanished without a trace, leaving a community and a loving family waiting for the day they can bring her home.
