Rickey Ferguson Jr., a 16-year-old high school football player from Deerfield Beach, Florida, tragically lost his life on December 28, 2022. Rickey was shot in the head while playing football at Westside Park in Deerfield Beach. The incident occurred near the 400 block of Southwest Second Street, where Rickey was seen interacting with others before the shooting.
He was immediately taken to Broward Health North, where he was placed in the intensive care unit but unfortunately succumbed to his injuries a few days later.
The Broward County Sheriff's Office quickly launched an investigation into the shooting. Surveillance footage from the park showed Rickey talking to people on the benches and a suspect, later identified as 14-year-old Keantae Vaughn, walking around him before the shooting. Vaughn was seen fleeing the scene and later met up with two other individuals. Vaughn's mother contacted authorities and brought her son to the police station, where he was subsequently arrested.
Initially, Vaughn faced charges of attempted second-degree murder, but these were upgraded to first-degree murder following Rickey's death. Vaughn, a ninth-grader at Andrews High School in Pompano Beach, was indicted by a grand jury and charged as an adult. The maximum penalty he faces is life in prison. Witnesses at the scene, including Rickey's friend, identified Vaughn as the shooter and stated that Vaughn had been playing with a gun and pointing it at Rickey before the fatal shot was fired. The motive behind the shooting remains unclear, but it was noted that Vaughn and Rickey had known each other and that Vaughn harbored a dislike for Rickey.
The community of Deerfield Beach was deeply affected by Rickey's death. His family, friends, and schoolmates mourned the loss of a young man who was passionate about football and loved by many.
