Kyser McKeever Luther, an 18-year-old from Leesburg, Florida, was tragically killed on September 16, 2019. Luther was found dead inside a red Ford Mustang parked in front of the Leesburg Supermarket on County Road 468. The incident occurred around 5 p.m. when multiple gunshots were fired into the vehicle from outside, striking Luther at least once in the head.
The police arrived at the scene to find Luther deceased inside the car, with a significant number of spent shell casings on the ground behind the vehicle. The authorities believe that a gray four-door sedan may have been involved in the shooting, and two black males seen near the Mustang at the time of the incident were sought for questioning.
Prior to his death, Luther had been arrested in August 2019 after a traffic stop revealed he was in possession of a loaded, unsheathed Kel-Tec .380-caliber handgun with an extended magazine, as well as heroin, cocaine, and methamphetamine. He was charged with trafficking in methamphetamine, possession of heroin and cocaine, and carrying a concealed unlicensed firearm. Luther was released on a $33,000 bond shortly before his death.
The investigation into Luther's murder involved multiple law enforcement agencies, including Leesburg detectives and crime scene technicians from the Lake County Sheriff's Office. Detectives followed various leads and sought search warrants for items related to the investigation, including the vehicle Luther was driving. Despite the efforts, no arrests were immediately made, and the suspects remained at large. The police urged anyone with information to contact Leesburg detectives or Crimeline to assist in solving the case.
Luther's death highlighted the ongoing issues of gun violence and drug-related crimes in the area. The community was left in shock, and the authorities continued to work diligently to bring justice for Kyser Luther and his family. The investigation remained active, with detectives pursuing all possible leads to identify and apprehend those responsible for the young man's untimely death.
