Hamid Lakhani, a 63-year-old store clerk from Sugar Land, Texas, was tragically shot and killed during a robbery at the WB Food Mart on August 31, 2019. The incident occurred around 8:30 p.m. when police were called to the scene in response to a robbery. Upon arrival, they found Lakhani with a gunshot wound. He was immediately taken to the hospital by EMS, where he was pronounced dead.
Lakhani, who was of South Asian descent, was well-known and beloved in his community.
The investigation quickly identified Treveon James Young, a 24-year-old African American male from Houston, as the primary suspect in the shooting. Young was later arrested in Las Vegas, Nevada, after Crime Stoppers increased the reward for his capture. He was found using a fake name and was already jailed for other charges, including grand theft auto. Young was sentenced to 55 years in prison for the murder of Hamid Lakhani.
In addition to Young, three other suspects were involved in the robbery. Kameryn Lamisha James, a 17-year-old African American female from Houston, was identified as the getaway driver. She confessed her involvement to a Fort Bend ISD School Resource Officer and was sentenced to 15 years in state prison. The other two suspects, both juveniles aged 16, were also charged with robbery and received sentences of 18-20 years.
The case garnered significant attention due to the brutal nature of the crime and the impact on the local community. Lakhani's widow, Perveen Lakhani, expressed her grief and relief at Young's arrest, stating that she felt alone and depressed but was supported by her daughter. The community remembered Hamid Lakhani as a kind and dedicated individual who was tragically taken too soon.
