On March 17, 2023, 21-year-old Jordan Idahosa, a college student from Georgia, was shot and killed during a chaotic Spring Break weekend in Miami Beach, Florida. Idahosa, who was enrolled at South Georgia State College and also took classes at Valdosta State University, was visiting Miami Beach with his friends for the spring break.
The incident occurred on Ocean Drive in the South Beach neighborhood. Miami Beach police officers responded to gunshots around 10:41 p.m.
near 7th Street and Ocean Drive, where they found two men with gunshot wounds. Idahosa was rushed to Jackson Memorial Hospital's Ryder Trauma Unit, where he was later pronounced dead. The second victim was treated on-site and released.
According to Idahosa's friend, Javon Johnson, who was with him at the time of the shooting, "My friend had called me to see where I was at, and I turned around for like 10 seconds. After that, all you heard was gunshots. I really didn’t know who it was. I couldn’t see anything.".
The shooting was described by authorities as a "targeted and isolated incident," though the motive has not been disclosed. Police recovered four firearms from the scene and arrested a suspect, Dontavious Leonard Polk, 24, an ex-convict from Fort Lauderdale. Polk had previously been sentenced to four years in prison for a carjacking incident with a deadly weapon in 2017 and was also convicted of robbery and battery of someone over 65. He was released from prison in 2021.
Idahosa's family and friends remembered him fondly. His brother, Sammy Idahosa, described him as a "special guy" who went from being homeschooled to becoming a scholar. "He’s like my twin brother,” Sammy said. “Jordan was the first Idahosa to depart from us. It doesn’t feel real. I just want people to know my brother was a soldier. My brother was a warrior and still is in spirit.".
The incident was part of a series of violent events during the Spring Break weekend in Miami Beach, prompting the city to impose an emergency curfew and state of emergency. Miami Beach Mayor Dan Gelber implemented a curfew from midnight to 6 a.m. each day, citing the difficulties in policing the area during Spring Break.
Idahosa was also part of Valdosta State University’s Collegiate Men organization, which aims to shape young college men for their future beyond college. His involvement with the organization was a testament to his character and commitment to excellence.
